Maintenance

Without regular maintenance an air conditioner loses about 5% of its original efficiency for each year of operation. This means that the 12 SEER unit that you bought just a few years ago may be functioning like a 9 SEER unit today! The good news is that you can recover most of that lost efficiency through regular maintenance. Studies show that with regular tune-ups a unit will maintain up to 95% of it’s original efficiency. This means that the cost of an annual tune-up is recovered very quickly in savings on your monthly electric bill and reduced repair costs. A properly serviced air conditioner will also do a better job of dehumidifying your home.

Installation

Air Conditioners are designed to cool your home on the hottest days. The reality is that there are only a few days per season where that condition exists.  Technology enables an air conditioner to improve indoor air circulation.

Central Air Conditioning System

These systems are connected to a home’s forced-air distribution system. Thus, the same motor, blower, and ductwork used for heating are used to distribute cool air from the air conditioning system.  These systems can be “zoned” so they will only cool one area of the home and not both for energy efficiency, as well overall comfort.

Through-The-Wall Air Conditioning System

These systems are installed by cutting a hole in the exterior wall and frame it out the same way you’d frame an opening for a window or door.

Ductless Air Conditioning System

The ductless air conditioning system works extremely well as a supplement to a central system, which doesn’t fully extend into certain areas.  With ductless air conditioning, you have a wall blower that’s installed on the inside wall of your home.  This is connected via a refrigerant line to a small compressor which sits outside, just like a central system.  The compressor supplies chilled refrigerant to the blower inside, which circulates the cooled air.

“Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio”  (SEER)

SEER rating is the method used to describe the efficiency of a particular air conditioning system. The systems purchased today typically range from 10.00 SEER to 18.00 SEER. If you have a home and the current system is 10-15 years old, you may have a system that ranges from 6.0 SEER to 10.00 SEER. Of course at the time it was installed, 10.00 SEER was considered “High Efficiency”. Today, with all the focus on conservation and energy savings, that “High Efficiency 10.00 SEER” from 10-15 years ago is growing obsolete.

Ask about energy saving – high efficiency models.
